听力原文:Man: I’m going to talk today about Elizabeth Elting, the co-CEO of the TransPerfect, one of the five largest language service companies in the world with estimated revenues around $225 million. Together with the spinoff business translations. com, Liz’s company employs 250 full-time staffers and 4,000 subcontractors, with 31 offices worldwide offering round-the-clock translation service.Despite the success of her business, TransPerfect had humble beginnings. Having once worked for a translation company after getting her Bachelor of Arts degree in Modern Languages and Literatures, Liz knew that the translation industry was composed of various small outfits offering inconsistent quality. She was then studying MBA at the New York University’s Stern School of Business when together with classmate Phil Shawe, she saw that huge opportunities await them in the translation business. The partners started TransPerfect from their dorm rooms in 1992.Her road to success was not easy, as the early days of TransPerfect were run with a shoestring budget. After years of toiling, Liz has achieved her goal of transforming the translation business and becoming one of the premier companies in the industry. The translation business suited Liz perfectly, as it blended together her passion for languages, culture and business—having studied in Spain, lived in Portugal, and worked in Venezuela. She speaks French and Spanish.Today, Liz has received a number of awards and recognitions for her outstanding entrepre-neurship, including Working Woman Magazine’s Entrepreneurial Excellence Award for Customer Service, the Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award, the Inc. 500 Award, and the Deloit-te &Touche Fast 50 Award four times.

听力原文:Man: Good morning, everyone. I’m Louise Pile from AromaScan. Today I’ll talk about the latest product in our field—electronic noses. The human senses are all being automated. We have electronic eyes and ears, and robots having a rudimentary sense of touch. Now the electronic nose is here, with my company as the world leader in this technology—launching the first electronic nose in 1999. Indeed, a rival nose has emerged within the past year from Newtech, and a third is due out next year by Sensors. As you may guess, the noses share the same basic design as the human version, that is, they have an array of sensors to detect molecules in the air which are linked to an electronic brain to make sense of the signals. The electronic noses cannot yet match the sensitivity of human smell any more than computerised voice recognition can compete with our ears. But for industrial purposes they have other advantages which are drawing potential users from the food and fragrance industries.A mass market beckons, right? But consumer applications lie several years in the future, because the noses cost about £ 25, 000 each. Now we are developing applications in a quite different area with our research partner. Trails at Red Star Hospital in Manchester have shown that one type of the instrument can detect wound infections at a very early stage. We are discussing possible licensing deals and joint ventures with international electronics and instrumentation companies, which would bring in more development funds.

听力原文:Man: It’s great to be here and have a chance to share some of my excitement with you. I got involved with computers at 18, and the computer was a very limited teletype that had to be connected through a phone line up to a mainframelike computer but my friends and I became fascinated with understanding what the computer can do, what was the future, and how would it be used. When we found out about chip technology, and the miracle of being able to improve the power of the chip exponentially, we realised that computers had a very bright future...The personal computer revolution got started in 1975, that’s when I left college and started Microsoft. These last 22 years have really been amazing, every prediction we’ve made about improvements have all come true. As we look ahead, the pace of innovation is not slowing down, in fact if anything it’s speeding up. Very high speed processors like 300 MHz Pentiums, or new -bit processors that we’re already developing Windows NT for: incredible storage capacity, which well let us store, not just data, but also digital video as well...Here we have an example where the word processor is looking at an English sentence, and suggesting that the grammar is not correct, and showing exactly how the grammar might be fixed... That pursuit of artificial intelligence is the most exciting thing in computer science... Another interesting thing that I think people aren’t expecting is computer vision. The actual digital cameras that allow you to have an image and scan that image are going down in cost...
